In 1968, at the age of 23, Kubby was diagnosed with malignant pheochromocytoma, a rare, fatal form of adrenal cancer. He had tumors surgically removed in 1968, 1975, and 1976, by which time the cancer had metastasized to his liver and beyond, and he was given less than five years to live.

After continuing chemotherapy, and another surgery at the Mayo Clinic in 1981, Kubby began treating his cancer solely with medical cannabis, and by maintaining a healthy diet.

From 1981-1986, he ran a property management company in Lake Tahoe, and from 1986-1991 he founded and published "Ski West," the number one selling ski magazine in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Italy, Australia, and Japan.

Kubby authored "The Politics of Consciousness" in 1995, and co-authored "Why Marijuana Should be Legal" in 1996. He was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Proposition 215, "The Compassionate Use Act of 1996," which led to the legalization of medical cannabis in California and 11 other states.

Two months after his 1998 Libertarian campaign for California Governor concluded, the Sheriff of Placer County raided Kubby's home and found 265 cannabis plants that were being grown in compliance with California state law. In a guest's room the sheriff also found some peyote and a mushroom stem for which Kubby and his wife were arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances.

Kubby's wife was acquitted of all charges while Kubby's jury hung 11-1 in favor of acquittal, resulting in the cannabis charges being dismissed. However, the jury convicted Kubby of possession for the peyote and the mushroom stem and he was sentenced to 120 days in jail.

Fearing that his cancer would kill him if he was denied medical cannabis by his jailers, Kubby and his family moved to Canada where he fought extradition for five years.

Steve Kubby, Jan. 28, 2006, discussing his health in jail before and after receiving Marinol (the THC cannabinoid found in cannabis): "I entered the Placer County Jail around noon yesterday. At that time my blood pressure was one-seventy over one-twenty, and I reported that I had passed blood in my urine. I also reported that I had one of the most severe blood-pressure attacks of my life, with chest pains for the first time ever for me, and I became so disoriented that I collapsed and I injured my back and head." ... Pat McCartney: "Steve, did you receive the Marinol?" Steve Kubby: "Yes, that has been a godsend for me. The blood has stopped passing through my urine. My kidneys, which were just throbbing with pain, are starting to calm down, and it's not doing what cannabis does for me, but it's keeping me alive. I am so grateful for that." - Above excerpt is from this longer phone interview from jail:

UPDATE [from Michele Kubby at www.kubby.com around Feb. 23, 2006]. "Spoke with Steve today. He's lost 25 pounds and has had blood pressure problems due to the poor diet he is being fed. He also has had shingles for three weeks, indicating that his immune system is failing. The jail feeds the inmates with the lowest quality, most processed food available. They do not believe this is affecting Steve's health, but his weight loss is getting quite dramatic. I am personally very concerned that he will not make it through this situation specifically because of the diet he is being fed. We are gathering information about the importance of diet and cancer because we are hoping to educate the jail about the danger they are putting Steve in with their poor food quality. So far, the jail has been very stubborn about offering Steve food that will nourish his body's particular needs. I am so angry at this poor treatment of Steve. Maybe if we all call the jail and try to educate them about the danger they are putting him in, they would relent and let us provide healthy food. So far, they won't even let us give him food. This is quite odd, because the jail has a deal with McDonald's to provide food from the outside. This is such a sick situation. I hope that it all ends up O.K. The girls and I have so many wonderful plans for our future together as a family. I pray we can see them come to fruition."

Much info on medi-pot patient, and Proposition 215 co-author, Steve Kubby's Jan. 26, 2006 arrest, incarceration, and dangerous medical problems in the Placer County jail in Auburn, California. Steve Kubby nearly died the first day or 2 in the Placer County, California jail in both 1999 and 2006 when he was without cannabis or cannabinoids such as Marinol (THC, a cannabinoid found in cannabis). His rare form of adrenal cancer, malignant metastasized pheochromocytoma, when untreated by cannabis, can produce dangerous adrenaline spikes that can cause hypertensive episodes of high blood pressure, which according to his doctors could kill him through heart attack, stroke, etc.. His doctors have said that he is one of the longest living survivors of this deadly adrenal cancer. Please go to kubby.com to see how you can help Steve Kubby. Info compiled at these links:

Medical Marijuana Activist Returns to State, Is Arrested
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-me-kubby28jan28,0,5549008.story?coll=la-news-politics-california

Quote (emphasis added):
------------

Kubby's oncologist in Canada expressed worries Friday that his rare form of cancer, pheochromocytoma, could threaten his life if he isn't allowed to continue using cannabis. Since the cancer was diagnosed a quarter century ago, Kubby, 59, has smoked up to a dozen marijuana cigarettes a day.

"The possibilities of what might happen are of a wide range, either from nothing much at all to that he might become sick and die," said Dr. Joseph Connors, an oncologist and University of British Columbia clinical professor.

Connors said there was no reason to subject Kubby to that risk. The cancer specialist has examined Kubby extensively and said he believed marijuana has kept the worst symptoms of his cancer in check.

"There's no other reasonable explanation for how he's done so well for so many years," Connors said.

Connors said a tumor in Kubby releases dangerous levels of substances called catecholamines ? colloquially known as adrenalin ? into his blood. Results can range from heart palpitations and shortness of breath to heart attack, stroke or even death in a "catecholamine storm," Connors said.

Section 40 from the Canadian government webpage on Steve Kubby. From the part called "MR. KUBBY'S MEDICAL HISTORY"
http://www.irb-cisr.gc.ca/en/decisions/public/kubby/kubby_e.htm#medical

Quote:
-----------

Dr. Connors, an expert in the area of adrenal cancers, and whose curriculum vitae [57] suggests is highly knowledgeable in this area of medicine, testified at the hearing about Mr. Kubby's medical condition. According to Dr. Connors, Mr. Kubby's tumour releases, in excess quantities, hormones normally found in the adrenal gland that are called catecholamines. Excessive levels of catecholamines in Mr. Kubby's blood cause a range of separate symptomatic problems including paroxysmal headaches, sudden flushing or pallor of the skin, palpitations (rapid and irregular beating of the heart), hypertension (sudden dangerous rise in blood pressure), excessive sweating, sudden abdominal cramps and diarrhea, chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, sudden severe weakness and anorexia (loss of appetite). If not controlled, Mr. Kubby's symptoms could evolve further to the point where a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or cerebral vascular accident (stroke) could occur. [58]
