PUBLIC archives of USENET newsgroups. [TopLink]

There are at least 2 public archives of Usenet newsgroup messages: Google and Mailgate (also called Newsgate). Both allow posting online or by email. Google's searchable archives go back 20 years and include more newsgroups. Mailgate may go back only the latest 500 messages (not sure), but their message lists are easier to scan because they are in thread order and because more characters in the titles are shown.

The messages are in thread order. It is possible to post online or via email. The message archives allow the first 55 characters of each message title to show in the message lists. There are 2 URLs listed for each Mailgate-Newsgate archive. For some unknown reason the URL with index.html on the end sometimes pulls up a message list that shows the dates of the messages, too, and not just the message titles. Try both URLs, and you'll see the difference once you get to an individual newsgroup's archive.

Email HOW-TO, lists INFO, and SPAM blocking. [TopLink]

There are several types of email lists. Some examples are Yahoo Groups (was previously called egroups), Listserv, Majordomo, Ezmlm, etc.. Listserv, Majordomo, and Ezmlm are the names of software that can be used to create email lists. Look them up in search engines.

*Google Directory - Computers > Internet > Mailing Lists > Hosting Companies.
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Mailing_Lists/Hosting_Companies/

*Yahoo Groups (was egroups) allows anybody to create and archive email lists on any topic. For Yahoo Groups access click the home page:
http://groups.yahoo.com

One uses email as the main means to send plain-text or HTML messages, attachments, etc. to email lists and newsgroups. Some email lists (such as Yahoo Groups) also allow posting to a list by clicking an online post link and filling in a web form message. One can use one's real name on one's email or one can use an alias or "handle." One can use the email service provided by one's internet service provider, or one can use one of the many free browser-based email services such as the highly-rated Yahoo Mail. It automatically filters out most spam and viruses.

Nearly all newsgroups have public archives, as do many email lists, yahoo groups, etc.. Some have archives available only to member subscribers. Some have no archives. Lists with public archives are likely to reach a wider and more varied audience. One that changes over time. Private lists tend to preach to the choir, though private lists have their purposes, too. There really is little to fear from being subscribed to publicly-archived lists.

One can maintain relative anonymity by not posting, or by posting only with an alias and browser-based email. It is not wise to admit to CURRENT drug use publicly though, since that would constitute probable cause for a search or surveillance in many places. Anonymity is good only up to a point. Determined law enforcement can break through most anonymity. It is not illegal to protest the drug war, though, in most places in the world.

Viruses come in attachments to email. Open with care. [TopLink]

In email the viruses come in the attachments. The person sending you the virus often does not know it. The virus hitchhikes on their email without asking the owner. So open or download attachments only if you are sure they are safe. The first thing to check is the "extension" on the attachment filename. That is the 3-letter tag at the end of the filename after the dot. Such as .htm .jpg .doc .txt and so on.

Unfortunately, the dumbasses at Microsoft have put the default setting of many versions of Windows so that the extensions are hidden, and not visible, in most cases. To correct this permanently, go to the view menu of any windows directory such as My Documents or My Computer. Click "Folder Options." Then click the view tab. Then be sure that the setting for "Hide file extensions for known file types" is UNchecked. Click OK. Then you can see the tricky way many viruses hide their true identity under multiple extensions on attachment filenames. The last extension is the accurate one. The ones before it are bogus, and are there to trick you into downloading the virus-laden attachment.

I only open attachments if I use an antivirus program first, even if I know who sent it to me and why. Of course many viruses now can send themselves as attachments to a message explaining why they were sent. But the reasons given are usually generic reasons, and so they are easy to spot.

I don't own an antivirus program and I don't need one. I use the highly-rated web-based email called Yahoo Mail. With Yahoo Mail when I click the "Download Attachments" link in an email message I get a page listing the attachment filenames and extensions. There is also a button next to each attachment that allows the attachment to be scanned by the free online Norton Antivirus at Yahoo Mail. I have detected many viruses this way. I didn't download them.

Viruses can't forward themselves with Yahoo Mail. One has to do it oneself by clicking the forward or reply button, and not noticing the attachment before sending the email. It's hard not to notice an attachment though, since there is a paperclip icon on the email when it arrives. There is also a list of the attachment filenames on a message before sending.

By the way; Yahoo Mail also has a great, fast spell checker for outgoing messages.

There is another way to read attachments, and avoid viruses. Use Yahoo Groups archives.

Clicking a message in a Yahoo Groups archive will automatically open HTML attachments. HTML attachments are just web pages, and are as safe as your browser security for other HTML pages. One has to click to open other attachments in Yahoo Groups archives. I open image attachments that have extensions I can recognize such as .jpg and so on. I don't usually open other attachments in Yahoo Groups archives.

If you think your computer has gotten a virus, or that it is becoming too buggy (for whatever reason), you can cure the problem best by doing a "clean install" of your system software onto a newly-erased and reformatted hard drive. Just be sure to backup important files first. Such as the My Documents folder, your favorites-bookmarks, etc.. An easy way to backup is to drag the My Documents folder to your CD-RW drive icon on your desktop. Or use WinZip and multiple floppy disks.

Yahoo Groups HOW-TO. [TopLink]

Egroups is now called Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo Group mailing lists can be set to have PUBLIC ARCHIVES that anybody can view.

With the publicly-archived Yahoo Groups anybody, even non-subscribers, can view both old and new email at anytime via the PUBLIC archives.

On the homepages of most Yahoo Groups anybody can click the "messages" link to see a longer list of the titles of the latest messages. Click any title to see that message. Also on the main page of most Yahoo Groups there is a list of the months and the number of messages posted that month. Click any month number to see the list of message titles for that month.

URL web addresses are clickable in messages in the archives.

For lists with public archives the main reason to subscribe is to post to the list. Otherwise the reasons that most people subscribe is to get list mail directly in their email box or to view a members-only archive.

Subscribers have the option of not getting any email. This is a good way for busy people to keep their email boxes emptier, and yet still be able to post to the list.

---------------------------------------

Yahoo Groups and EMAIL ADDRESSES in archived messages. [TopLink]

Email addresses in messages in the archives are not fully shown. This is to prevent spammers from collecting email addresses.

But if you are signed in to Yahoo Groups you can click any email address in an archived message. A form will pop up that allows you to email that address. The email will be from the email address you use for Yahoo Groups membership. You still won't see the full email address found in the archived message, but your message will be sent to that address.

---------------------------------------

Yahoo Groups "EXPAND MESSAGES" button. See 15 messages at once. [TopLink]

Click the "expand messages" button that is on the message index page of any Yahoo Group with an archive. 15 messages will be opened at once in one long web page digest with each message followed by the next. The first message will be the one at the top of the message index. The messages will be in chronological or thread order. The message order depends on whether you had the message index in thread order (by clicking the "thread" button), or in the default chronological order (the "date" button).

You can choose which message is at the top of the digest. Just put in a message number in the "Msg #" spot on the message index page. Then click "Go" to get a new message index. This new message index will start with that message number. Then click "expand messages" to open 15 messages starting with that message number onwards.

---------------------------------------

Quick ways to subscribe to a Yahoo Group. [TopLink]

One can easily subscribe to any Yahoo Group by clicking the "Join this Group" link near the top of all Yahoo Group pages. If you have any questions on how to join, sign in, retrieve your ID or password, or any other questions, click the "Sign-in help" link:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/edit

Also, on the homepage for any Yahoo Group there is an email address for subscribing. Send any email to the address. The address is found near the bottom of the homepage. An example of a subscription address:

Yahoo Groups REMOTE mailing lists and archives. [TopLink]

A remote list can use Yahoo Groups as a public or private archive of its list messages. A remote list uses its own software, and then sends list mail to a Yahoo Group. It is easy to set up a Yahoo Group as an archive for an existing mailing list. It only takes a few minutes to set up a Yahoo Group.

One just subscribes that Yahoo Group to the existing mailing list. The archive can be set up for public access by anyone, or it can be set up so that people have to subscribe to the Yahoo Group in order to see the archive. But only subscribers to the remote list can send messages to the Yahoo Group archive, and only via the remote list software.

Such Yahoo Groups archives are good for people who want to check in on a list's messages, but don't want to receive list mail. Some people just don't want to get too much list mail in their email inboxes and folders.

Here's how to create a remote list. First create a Yahoo Group. Then the owner clicks the "Group Settings" links from the column on the left side of the page. Then click the "Edit" button for the "Remote Group Settings" section at the bottom of the page. Fill in the blanks, and then click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.

Follow the instructions for subscribing the Yahoo Group to the remote mailing list. The Yahoo Group should soon start receiving messages from the remote mailing list. Yahoo Groups forwards the remote list mail to the Yahoo Group members and to the Yahoo Group archive.

-------

The HempTalk remote mailing list archive described and linked below seems to have stopped using Yahoo Groups to publicly archive any further list mail from December, 2000 onwards.

The old public Yahoo Group archive still exists though, and has some interesting history, especially of the December 1999 WTO (World Trade Organization) protests in Seattle, since this remote mailing list is based out of Washington state.

You can use the shortcut link just below, or you can go to this Yahoo Group's main page, and look up "wto" in this Yahoo Group's search engine. For your information the first Independent Media Center (there are now IndyMedia websites worldwide) started during the WTO events in Seattle in late 1999. Cannabis activists were participants in the WTO events and protests, too. For proof click this search shortcut:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hemp-talk/messagesearch/7267?query=wto

*HempTalk egroup archive. HempTalk is also called a REMOTE Yahoo Group. HempTalk is a cannabis email list. HempTalk uses its own email list software, but at one time used egroups (now called Yahoo groups) as its public archive. HempTalk has several hundred subscribers, but the numbers didn't show up on the egroups main page, because most members subscribed through HempNet, and not Egroups. HempTalk had disabled the onsite egroups posting option, and the egroup mailing address. Anyone (whether subscribed or not) can view the messages by clicking the "messages" button on the egroup main page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hemp-talk/messages

*HempTalk email list is still around. Click the link below. It is HempNet's mailing list webpage, and has a simple online subscription webform. Just enter your email address there.
http://www.hemp.net/lists.html

Even though HempTalk was archived at egroups.com for awhile, subscription only worked through Hemp.net and to post messages subscribers' email had to be sent to hemp-talk@hemp.net and not to hemp-talk@egroups.com

*Hemp-talk messages list of WTO links. Get them from an egroups.com (now called Yahoo groups) search for "WTO" in the public archives for the Washington-state-based, Hemp-Talk mailing list. Seattle (where the December 1999 World Trade Organization meeting was held) is in Washington state. Click below to get to the old HempTalk message archives. The last messages are listed when you click the "messages" button. Click the "home" link to see the monthly archives. Once on the homepage click any month. Also, there is a blank search form where you can enter the search term:
wto

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hemp-talk/messages

The most relevant WTO messages are the ones from December 1999 when the WTO meetings, rallies, and riots occurred. Click the HempTalk WTO search shortcut URL below. Once there one can click the "next" or "previous" buttons for even more WTO-related messages.
