Consider using a free web-based email address for activism, GMM-MMM, etc.. 

Good, popular ones are Google Mail http://mail.google.com and Yahoo Mail http://mail.yahoo.com. Both filter out viruses for free. Both provide gigabytes of free email storage. Both allow use of alias names that you can change at any time. Do not sign up for free Hotmail email. It has had many problems over the years. 

Also, avoid AOL email addresses for GMM-MMM use. AOL blocks many MMM emails from getting through to AOL email addresses, if the email contains certain MMM web address URLs. AOL has had many complaints due to its blocking of important requested emails from many organizations.

Google Mail has an additional feature that helps to limit spam. The feature blocks email address harvesting by spammers. The way it is done is that you are given the option to specify whether graphics are opened in any email. Graphics are often used to tell spammers that someone opened their spam email. There is a link setting at the top of all email that allows you to decide whether to view graphics found in that email. It also asks whether you want that setting for all email from that email address. It can be reversed too.

I recommend Google Mail. I rarely use Yahoo Mail any more. Yahoo Mail is slower to use, and less intuitive in its format and use. It also frequently bunches up paragraphs in material that one copies and pastes into Yahoo mail. Yahoo Mail often deletes the blank lines between paragraphs. Google Mail does not do that. Another disadvantage with Yahoo Mail is that the new Yahoo Mail format has a right-side ad banner that constricts the space for viewing the titles of email in the inbox. Ads in Google Mail do not interfere with anything. Classic Yahoo Mail does not have this problem. Yahoo Mail is OK, but overall, Google Mail is better, easier, and faster.
